Summit-to-Sea: July Steps Challenge

Time to lace up!

Your travels may look a little different this year, but get ready to see how far you can travel by foot for the month of July.

This challenge will feature a map from Afton, Virginia (the summit), all the way to Virginia Beach, Virginia (the sea), which is roughly 193 miles. During the month of July, travel just a few miles, or all the way. You set your own pace and your own goals. Participants may use a supported activity tracking device to record the daily distance traveled or input manually on Challenge Runner.

Challenge details:

  • This challenge will run for the month of July.
  • The top three individuals with the highest total distance traveled, and three additional Challenge participants, will receive a produce share from Shenandoah Produce!
  • In the leaderboard, each participant is able to see where they stand in relation to other participants, although the names remain anonymous.
  • Devices (like Fitbits) should sync every day, but participants may take up to seven days after the log date to sync data.
  • Although activity trackers are supported, they are not required. Participants may enter their own data using the ChallengeRunner website or ChallengeRunner smartphone apps.

Tracking Device Info:

In order to receive data from tracking devices, each participant must first install the appropriate software and create an account on the activity tracker's website.
Tracking devices include: Fitbit, Apple Watch, Apple Health (smart phone), etc. Every participant must then authorize to capture individual data as follows:
After logging in, the participant must click the Profile link at the top of the home page and then click the Authorize link. On the tracker website shown the user must enter their ID and Password they created when they first registered the device. Once the device is authorized, the user must ensure that they connect their device to the activity tracker's website at least once per day to sync data.

What are some of the benefits of moving more?
