Lose Well Participant: Blake

1) What inspired or motivated you to sign up for the Lose Well program?
I was extremely tired of feeling tired and being embarrassed by my weight. I was very frustrated and really couldn’t muster the energy to attempt something of this magnitude on my own. I basically felt like I needed a helping hand and this program seemed to offer that. It also appealed to me because of the combination of nutrition education and gym membership seemed to make sense and was very reasonably priced for my budget.

2) How would you describe the program to a friend who is considering it?
For me it was a life-changing event. Very positive energy by the nutritionist and the format at the gym is great for people that haven’t been going to a gym. ACAC people are very helpful. I would tell my friends that the folks involved in the Lose Well Program know what they’re doing, listen to them and you will be successful. I could barely get off of the couch at night and on weekends. Now I go to the gym 3-4 times a week and exercise regularly at home.

3) How much weight have you lost so far? How much of that was during the 6-month program?
I’ve lost 66 pounds so far. 57 were in the 6 month program. I’ve continued my membership at ACAC and work out 3-4 times a week. I have also maintained my healthy eating regimen.
4) What was the hardest part of the program / lifestyle change for you? What was the easiest part?
Hardest was laying off foods I used for comfort; ice cream, potato chips, bread and cheese. But you don’t have to starve yourself, just use common sense. I replaced ice cream with two 25 calorie popsicles a night for my sweet tooth. A simple switch from 80/20 burger to 93/7 drops the calories from 320 to 120 per patty. What was difficult initially became relatively easy as I started seeing the positive results. Easiest was getting in to working out again. I played a lot of sports when I was younger and it feels good to work out regularly.

5) What was surprising about your experience during or after the program?
Anne’s positive attitude. The nutrition classes were fun to go to and very informative. I used to believe that if I ate pretzels instead of potato chips I was doing well. Turns out those pretzels aren’t too good for you either. Also, the ACAC experience. For a reason that I can’t necessarily explain, I had a predetermined negative opinion of ACAC but it has been just the opposite of what I expected. They are very helpful and it is a fun place to go. I see many co-workers there as well.

6) What are your current health goals?
I would like to lose another 30-40 pounds. I would like to continue my healthy diet and motivate my wife and kids to do the same. They have been working out with me and eating better as well. I’ve been taken off of two prescription medicines that I’ve been on for years and expect to come off of a couple more in the near future.

7) Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience or about the Lose Well program?
I am extremely fortunate to work in an organization where an opportunity like this program is available. Everyone involved, Anne, Leanne and the folks at ACAC have been extremely supportive as well as the people in my department. My supervisor, Trevor, walked at lunch time with me 2-3 times a week in the first two months of the program. That helped me continue my momentum. My co-workers have been cheering me on and offering much needed encouragement. I would say to fellow employees: don’t feel like you can’t do it. I know what it feels like to be frustrated with yourself, to be tired of shopping in the Big and Tall Section, to not want to look in the mirror or step on a scale. I hated to hear “hey big guy.” The main message is this program works!!! And it’s real simple: do what they tell you to do and you will lose weight and be healthier. It isn’t always easy but the results are sure worth all the hard work. THIS PROGRAM HAS CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.
